Why is my bathroom drain clogged?
The drains in your bathroom can clog for many reasons.
Hair and Soap Scum
Typically, bathroom drains are clogged by a combination of hair and soap scum. Hair should easily slide down the drain, but when it combines with the products we use in the bathroom, the hair can turn into a tangled clog. The bathroom products we use in the sink, shower, and tub are full of oils, waxes, and other substances that can gum up the inside of a drain.
Problem with the Pipe
Depending on what kind of material the pipe is made of and how old the pipe itself is, there could be an issue causing bathroom stoppages. It’s possible that your pipe and deteriorated and pieces of a broken pipe are causing the stoppage.
Main Sewer Line Backup
Your bathtub and shower may not be the problem. It could be something more serious like the main sewer line backing up. In order to diagnose this issue, you’ll need to rely on an experienced plumber.
How can I prevent drain stoppages in the bathroom?
The best way to prevent drain stoppages is to have your drains cleaned regularly by an experienced plumber. However, there are a few things you can do at home.
Your tub and shower floor drains should already have some type of strainer. However, if you are noticing that the strainer isn’t working properly, you might need to remove and replace it with another design.
Vinegar and hot water
To maintain your pipes and prevent clogs, you can pour a mixture of hot water and vinegar down the drain. Let it sit there for about an hour and then run hot water down the drain. This is also a great alternative to chemical drain cleaner that can be hazardous to your health.
You should always avoid chemicals when possible. Drain cleaners can actually damage your drain as the acids in them can eat away at pipes. Chemicals can make your plumbing problems worse, so never use them and always call your plumber when you have a serious issue.
