Water Filtration 101

We love our jobs for so many reasons, but one of those is that we can help our customers improve their lives and homes. It’s so important to invest in your home’s infrastructure and one of the most effective ways you can do that is by installing a water filtration system in your home. While the United States generally has healthy tap water, especially when compared to other countries, there’s always room for improvement.

Unfortunately, this is something you don’t have control over and it can be frustrating to rely on the infrastructure when you don’t know if something could be wrong with it. So many people rely on the electric grid and it does well until there’s a blackout because of outdated transformers or something like that. The same logic applies to the water infrastructure in the United States. Luckily, with a water filtration system, you can have the utmost confidence in the health and safety of your water.

Hard water: What is it and Why is it a Problem?

Hard water is water that has high levels of mineral deposits. These minerals include calcium and magnesium. This is why tap water can have a chalky look to it. Now, calcium and magnesium are minerals your body needs so there’s no harm in drinking water that looks like this.

However, there are some definite side effects. One is that people prefer clear water that doesn’t have any kind of chalky taste or anything like that. Additionally, hardwater can dry things out. This can impact your skin and hair when you shower or bathe. The same process can dry out your clothes and affect the vibrancy of colors. Many people use water filtration to overcome these problems as well as rid water of bacteria and other contaminants.

What Types of Water Filters Are There?

Water filters are divided into two main groupings: whole-home and under-the-counter. Both options are excellent choices with their own benefits. Let’s break them both down starting with whole-home.

Whole-home

These names are fairly self-explanatory. A whole-home system filters all the water that enters your home. This is the preferred way to rid your home of hardwater issues. Not only will you have better-tasting water, but you’ll also have vibrant clothing and your showers won’t dry out your skin.

Under-The-Counter

An under-the-counter system is designed to be specific and concentrated. This is ideal for where you get your drinking water out of the tap. Most of the time this is in the kitchen, but it can be placed elsewhere as well. They can be further divided into how many stages of filtration you are using. Water filtered two times may not be as enjoyable as water filtered four times, for example. Either way, this system gives the health and clarity of your water a boost in a specific area. They are designed to be accessible so you can switch out filters easily and maintain system quality.

So, which system is best for you? It really depends on what your goals are. If you have terrible hardwater in your area, as is fairly common throughout the country, it may be beneficial to consider a whole-home system. It’s a convenient set it and forget it type of system and it will have impacts throughout your entire home. An under the counter system is limited in scope but can have an impact on the most important faucet in the house. You’ll have the confidence that your water is completely healthy and you’re water will taste great as well!
